Dear Neighbor,
The North Salem
Improvement Society is a not-for -profit organization that has been in
existence since 1931. Our main purpose is to make our town " a more
beautiful place in which to live
"
In recent years one of our fund-raising projects
was to sell daffodils ( the one bulb deer don't normally eat) and use the profits
to plant daffodil bulbs in public places around our town, including across the
street from Delancey Hall.
Our largest event is special Christmas Eve event
where Santa arrives, not atop a reindeer-pulled sleigh, but atop one of the Croton
Falls Fire Department's finest red engine. It is truly a sight that delights
children of all ages. At the tree, located on Titicus Road where Baxter Road
meets it, we serve hot cider, cocoa, chocolate chip cookies, and special gingerbread
cookies handed out by Santa to every child. There is a fire which keeps everyone
warm while singing carols.
As we celebrate our 71st year in existence, we'd
like to take a moment to list all our remarkable accomplishments of this organization
and its chain of volunteers since its inception.
Christmas Eve -
assumed the responsibility for the town Christmas tree sight and replaced the
trees as necessary over the decades, as well as hosting the annual event.
Public Library -
opened first free library of North Salem in 1932 on the second floor of Delancey
Hall. The Society operated and financed the library until its incorporation in
1935, and after that continued with additional financial support for many years.
Fire Truck -
Financed the purchase of the FIRST fire truck for the North Salem - Salem Center
district. Over $10,750 was raised in 1950.
Delancey Hall -
furnished two rooms in hall for meetings in 1932. Later converted the unheated,
unlighted, waterless building into a refurbished building for Town Hall use.
Historical Society -
launched the successful drive to establish our town's Historical Society which
received its charter in 1969; conducted a house tour for financing this project.
Bridle Paths -
established bridle paths in the 1930's and supervised their maintenance.
Unemployment -
during the 1030's organized a committee, financed by four Society members, which
gave financial aid to fellow townspeople.
Blood Bank - worked
actively to stimulate interest in blood-bank programs and arranged for the Red
Cross Blood Mobile Unit in 1971.
Dogwood Trees -
from its inception the Society planted dozens of flowering dogwood trees in select
locations along our road-sides.
Roadside Clean -
for over two decades organized an annual road-side litter clean-up campaign with
the willing assistance of our Highway Department.
Roadside Triangles -
worked with our highway department to establish planting areas (they built, we
planted!) at several intersections throughout town.
So you see, over the years we've done a lot more than
just plant daffodils.
However, the society is only as strong and successful
as its membership.
We will be having a membership drive next Autumn and
we hope you will join us.
In the meantime please feel free to check this web-site for updates on our
projects and feel free to join in any future projects that will be posted on
this site.
The North Salem Improvement Society is perhaps the oldest
organization
in North Salem. Founded in 1931, it was responsible for opening the
first library in town, purchasing our town's first fire truck,
establishing the town's historical society, refurbishing Delancey Hall
as town hall, building bridle paths and organizing the first recycling
programs.
Current activities include the annual Christmas Eve tree lighting event,
the plantings of a number of triangles around town with shrubs and
flowers, creating and maintaining attractive road signage, publishing
newsletters and special events.
Look for our big 75th anniversary event next year!
We welcome new members and directors.
